About this Safari
Hello Dear Adventurers,
Our Omo-Turkana adventures have been planned to take us through some of the remotest and most ancient landscapes of Africa, where few people live, and even fewer people roam. Our path will follow in the footsteps of famous explorers of yore (except for a few small deviations, such as a nice scenic charter flight and a chopper ride that the old-timers would have killed for, hehehe).
Our first scenic flight will be over Gambella National Park, and with some luck, we will fly over herds of white-eared kob that are migrants to Ethiopia from South Sudan at this time of the year. If we are extraordinarily lucky, we may even spot a few Nile lechwe, a very rare sighting of another stunningly beautiful antelope.
From here, we’ll move on to the Omo Valley, which is located in the south-western part of Ethiopia, bordering South Sudan and Kenya. Our first stop will be in a small village in the Upper Omo Valley that is so off-the-beaten-track that Google maps sometimes geo-locates it on the Ethiopian side of the border and sometimes on the South Sudanese side (not to worry though, it is firmly in Ethiopia!) From the Upper Omo Valley, we will meander southwards, along the Omo River, to the Lower Omo Valley, visiting a variety of hamlets and villages, and fantastically attired people along the way.
We will cross the border into Kenya at the little town of Omorate, and from there, head down to Ileret Beach, where we will be collected by a chopper. We will fly over the Jade Sea, as well as Central Island National Park – touching down where we can to take in the stunning landscapes.
After a night at Desert Rose, a beautiful lodge just south of Lake Turkana, we will take one last chopper flight over some of the wildest and most rugged landscapes of nothern Kenya – including volcanic craters and soda lakes with magical names like Suguta Valley, Lake Logipi and and Painted Valley. From there, we will swoop down to Lake Naivasha, before making our way back to Nairobi, for immigration.
Yes, this is not your garden-variety safari. This part of Africa is truly an Adventure with a capital A, all the way down from Mizan Teferi’s runway (which also doubles as their football field) in Ethiopia, to the smoking craters and Nile crocodile colonies on the shores of Lake Turkana in Kenya.
I am so looking forward to having you join me on this exciting trip,
Sangeeta
