Day By Day Itinerary
Starting in Malawi’s capital city, we charter flight down into Majete Reserve for a few nightsat the new & very appealing Mkulumadzi Camp. Here we will explore this newly resurgent park, a success story from the good people in the African Parks Foundation
Connecting by air to Likoma Island in the centre of the lake, we link up with the amazing folks at Nkwichi Lodge who take us across by boat to their lakeside paradise. Here we spend a few nights including (if you are up for it) a night in the best bed in Africa – the Nkwichi StarBed
Connecting by private charter to Lugenda Camp in the vast Niassa Reserve, where we spend a handful of nights exploring by boat, vehicle & on foot, this amazingly diverse wilderness area, second only in size to Tanzania’s Selous (to which it is linked by way of an innovative wildlife corridor forming possibly the biggest protected area in the world today)
Connecting by scheduled air charter we head to Ibo Island for a touch of history & culture – this is what Zanzibar’s Stonetown was like before the tourism rush. A very intriguing & mystical place, Ibo is a gem of a stopover before connecting with our exclusive & highly relaxing mobile dhow safari that drifts up along the islets & sandy white beaches of the Quirimbas archipelago. A few days spent exploring this stunning marine wonderland are the perfect tonic to round off this unusual yet highly-worthwhile safari to two of Africa’s lesser known countries…
Not the first country on everyone’s safari radar, and possibly more of a destination for a repeat African safari – however there is no shortage of interesting spots to explore & discover in Malawi.
With more than two-thirds of the country dominated by Lake Malawi, the country’s tourism is as you can imagine mostly based on or around the lake. However, if it is wildlife you are after then you will need to travel away from its shores to places like Nyika, Liwonde & Majete – all parks with unusual stories & good wildlife numbers. The lake itself is home to some incredible freshwater fishing, snorkelling (with its unique cichlid fish) & other water-based activities (sailing, kayaking, etc.)
A new-kid-on-the-block, but a country rapidly gaining a reputation as an African beach & bush destination for the traveller looking for something a little different; away from the masses & with some unusual – real – African experiences. The beaches & more especially the exclusive islands offshore are home to some exquisite luxury lodges & water-based activities.
Inland there one or two emerging reserves offering unexpectedly good wildlife viewing in Niassa & Gorongosa. Both of these are scenically spectacular & each has a very unique story to tell – a far cry from some of the more sterile game reserves in the region.
Finally, Mozambique is home to two other very special places on opposite ends of the country: the buzzy capital city, Maputo, with its eclectic mix of Europe-meets-Africa is worth a night or two to soak up late-night African jazz in seedy (but safe) clubs after all-you-can-eat seafood feasts; and the lakeside paradise that is Nkwichi Lodge in the Manda Wilderness off Lake Malawi (or Lago Niassa as it is called in Mozambique). Neither of these would normally be the first names on your safari bucket list, but certainly in the case of the latter one – I am telling you it should!
