Getting to Sunderban Tiger Camp
How do we reach the camp?
You drive to Gadkhali, and from there we arrange a boat pickup across to Dayapur Island, where the camp sits opposite Sunderban National Park on the Pitchkhali River. It is set up as a two to five day escape from Kolkata, so it fits neatly onto a wider India itinerary.
How does wildlife viewing work in a mangrove forest?
Largely by water. Wildlife cruise safaris take you along the tranquil waterways of the largest mangrove forest in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site and biosphere reserve. Local naturalists lead the way, looking for saltwater crocodile and the elusive Royal Bengal tiger, with birdwatching and nature walks alongside.
Is there more to do than wildlife?
There is. The camp has run tourism in the Sundarbans since 2004 and offers honey collection tours and cultural interactions with local people. Guests can watch the local adivasis perform their age-old tribal dance, or see the play known as Bonobibi Jatra. Rates start from US$90 per person per night.
