“Nouabalé-Ndoki is special in so many ways…
The lack of any road inside the park means that it’s a long 9-10 km hike from the Djéké trailhead to Mondika camp, but this gives you the time to immerse yourself in the forest.
No talking - just the soft, steady tramping of feet, punctuated by the powerful whoosh of black-casqued hornbills taking off over the canopy, the whoop-gobble calls of grey-cheeked mangabeys as they forage for breakfast along the treetops, tantalizing metallic blue glimpses of great blue turacos flitting from branch to branch, a shy plumed guinea fowl peering silently from the undergrowth… It’s a beautiful forest hike and not simply a way to get to Mondika.
One of the highlights of our recent Congo journey was a visit to Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, an unlogged tropical rainforest in the northern Republic of Congo. Established in 1993, this UNESCO World Heritage Site forms part of the Trinational Sangha protected area. The park is managed by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), and since their focus so far has been primarily on research, it’s only the very intrepid visitors who make their way here.
This year, 24 Chalo guests descended on them in sub-groups of 4 each and WCS could not have been more welcoming! They completed their rebuild of the Wali Baï platform scant days before we got there (thank you!), and @Flor, our dynamic & warm WCS host has promised me that she will ensure that the iconic Mbeli Baï will be rebuilt in time for our 2028 trip, yay!! That particular stopover promises chimps, gorillas, eles, bongos, red river hogs and so much more - all in the same baï!
