Mozambique Visas – Requirements & More
Majority of visitors will require a visa to enter Mozambique. Since obtaining a visa on arrival is not guaranteed, we recommend all travelers obtain a visa prior to their journey.
List of countries exempt from obtaining a Mozambican visa
Nationals from Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are exempt if their tourist travel does not exceed 30 days.

Typical Passport Requirements
Most countries in Africa require a passport with a minimum validity of six months from the date of travel and between 2 – 6 consecutive blank pages. Please verify the exact requirements prior to travel.
General documents required for obtaining a Mozambican tourist visa
- Valid passport with at least six months validity and at least three (3) or more blank pages.
- Photocopy of the main passport page(s).
- Two (2) colour passport photos.
- A document to confirm the applicant’s address during his/her time in Mozambique. This may be either a Hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from the host in Mozambique, which is required if the applicant will be staying at a private home with his/her family or friends. The invitation letter/Term of Responsibility must be signed by the host and authenticated by an official Notary.
- Applicants must have a return ticket and adequate funds for the duration of their stay in Mozambique.
- Visitors with tourist visas are not allowed to engage in any employment (including voluntary work) while in Mozambique.
- All documents must be written in English.

Mozambique visas and entry: common questions
Do I need a visa for Mozambique?
It depends. Twenty-nine nationalities are visa-exempt for short tourist stays, including the United States, the UK, Canada, Japan, Singapore, the UAE and most of Western Europe. India is not among them, so Indian passport holders need an e-visa. But visa-exempt does not mean nothing to file — see the next question, because this is where people come unstuck.
I am visa-exempt. Do I really need to do anything?
Yes. Since April 2025 visa-exempt travellers must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation at least 48 hours before travel. It is valid 60 days from approval and permits stays of up to 30 days, extendable once in-country by a further 30. Missing the 48-hour window because you assumed visa-free meant paperwork-free is the most common Mozambique failure, and it is entirely avoidable.
Where do I apply?
The official portal is evisa.gov.mz, which handles both the ETA for visa-exempt nationals and the e-visa for everyone else. A warning that applies to every country on this site: commercial reseller sites consistently outrank the official portals in search results, because the government portals are JavaScript applications that index badly while the copycats are static pages that index beautifully. They charge a markup for filling in the same form. Check the domain before you pay anyone.
I am travelling with children — what do I need?
Mozambique has not relaxed anything, unlike South Africa. You need an unabridged birth certificate naming both parents, and where a child travels with one parent or alone, a notarised parental consent affidavit that is less than three months old. That three-month freshness window is unusual and it catches families who reuse an affidavit from a previous trip — check the date on yours.
What else gets checked at the border?
Passport validity of six months and at least two blank pages. At the border you must produce either a written invitation from your host or a confirmed accommodation reservation, plus a return or onward air ticket. Keep the border receipt — you need it to exit. Currency must be declared above the published thresholds. If you are crossing by land from South Africa, note that the Lebombo–Ressano Garcia crossing has severe delays and a documented robbery risk; we generally route guests by air.
