Namibia visas and entry: common questions

Do I still enter Namibia visa-free?

Probably not, and this changed on 1 April 2025 — a lot of operator pages are still wrong about it. Namibia ended visa-free entry for 33 previously exempt nationalities including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and most of the EU. Those travellers now need a visa, obtainable online in advance or on arrival at Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Katima Mulilo and Ngoma. Most SADC nationals — South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe — remain exempt.

Is Namibia’s e-visa a real e-visa?

Not quite, and understanding this saves confusion at the airport. It is an online pre-approval; the visa itself is still stamped at the port of entry. Applying online and applying on arrival are the same legal process at different times — online just shortens the queue. Print the approval notice and bring it with you. The official portal is eservices.mhaiss.gov.na. A warning that applies to every country on this site: commercial reseller sites consistently outrank the official portals in search results, because the government portals are JavaScript applications that index badly while the copycats are static pages that index beautifully. They charge a markup for filling in the same form. Check the domain before you pay anyone.

I hold an Indian passport — can I get a visa on arrival?

The official Namibian mission list does not include India among the visa-on-arrival nationalities, which means applying in advance at a Namibian mission. We should be straight with you that one secondary source disagrees with this, and we could not reconcile the two — the mission list is the stronger authority, so plan on applying in advance and confirm with the mission before you book flights.

What are Namibia’s passport requirements?

Six months’ validity beyond arrival and three blank pages — and there is a specific trap here. Namibian officials routinely refuse to place entry stamps or visas on blank endorsement or remarks pages. You need three blank visa pages, not three blank pages of any kind. Check the actual page headings in your passport before you travel.

What else gets checked at the border?

Namibia asks for more at the counter than most of the region: accommodation confirmation, proof of sufficient funds, an itinerary, and travel or medical insurance documentation. The insurance requirement is unusual here and worth preparing for. Minors need unabridged long-form birth certificates showing both parents, with notarised consent or custody papers where one parent travels alone — Namibia has not relaxed this the way South Africa has. A yellow fever certificate applies if you are arriving from a risk country, and note Namibia’s age threshold is nine months.
