Questions about this Kenya safari

Where does this eight-day trip go?

You begin at Karen Gables in Nairobi, fly to Elerai Camp in the 5,000-acre Elerai Private Conservancy southeast of Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, then continue to Basecamp Masai Mara on the Talek River. It runs eight days and seven nights, with scheduled flights linking each leg.

Why stay in a conservancy rather than Amboseli itself?

The Elerai Private Conservancy gives you unspoiled landscapes and wildlife encounters away from the crowds of Amboseli National Park, while still sitting in the same ecosystem beneath Kilimanjaro. It also allows activities that the national park does not, such as night game drives, guided bush walks and mountain biking.

What is included in the cost?

Rates start from US$5,346 per person, covering bed and breakfast at Karen Gables, full board at the camps, drinks at Elerai, shared scheduled day game drives, night drives, bush walks, mountain biking and a sundowner at Elerai, a range of activities at Basecamp, park and conservancy fees, scheduled flights, one single-entry visa, AMREF Flying Doctors membership, transfers and laundry.

Does this work for a family?

It can. Basecamp Masai Mara runs a Young Explorers children's club, along with picnic excursions, garden dining, a guided bird walk and a nature forest and tree nursery tour. There are also visits to Basecamp's conservation and community projects, the Maasai Brand tour and the Enjoolata Awareness Centre, plus time with Maasai neighbours along the Talek River.

When should we travel, and how do rates change?

The recommended season is May to October. Rates of US$5,346 apply from 1 March to 30 April, 1 to 30 June and 1 to 30 November. From 4 January to 28 February, 1 to 31 October and 1 to 15 December the rate is US$5,583, and 1 July to 30 September is US$6,183. May has no rates because Elerai Camp is closed.
