Questions about this Kilimanjaro climb

Which route do you use and how many days are on the mountain?

The climb follows the Lemosho route over eight days, with a night at Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge before and after. You ascend through Afromontane forest to the edge of the remnants of the Shira volcano, then circumnavigate the main peak, Kibo, passing the giant steps and glacial valleys. The route is deliberately leisurely to allow proper acclimatisation and it avoids the busier approaches.

How does the price change with group size?

Rates are per person and drop as the group grows. A single traveller pays US$11,996, two people sharing US$8,470 each, three US$8,057 each, and groups of four to eight US$7,560 each. Rates for groups larger than eight are available on request. This is a private itinerary, though we can look at a scheduled departure if you prefer.

What camping equipment is provided?

Each climber gets a sleeping tent, sleeping cot, three-inch mattress, pillow, sleeping bag and thermal liner, and the camp includes mess, shower and toilet tents. A camp crew, cook and team of porters travel with you, and drinking water, tea, coffee and hot chocolate are provided on the hike. A specific packing list is supplied before departure.

How fit do I need to be, and can children come?

Climbing is more strenuous than a normal safari and requires a specific level of fitness; we provide a fitness preparation guide well ahead of departure so you can train properly. The trip is not suitable for children under nine. If you are unsure whether it is within reach, talk to us before booking and we can walk you through the demands.

What safety measures are in place?

Guides are trained and certified for Kilimanjaro and work to a one-to-two guide-to-climber ratio. Supplemental oxygen and pulse oximeters are carried, and there is a pre-trip briefing and post-trip debriefing. AMREF Flying Doctors membership is included. Guide tips of around US$300 per person are recommended and are not part of the quoted cost.
