Can you see the Big Five in Rwanda?
In Akagera National Park, yes. Once close to ruin through human encroachment and poaching, the park has been regenerated and now holds the Big Five along with plenty of plains game and one of the highest densities of hippo in Africa. Magashi Camp sits within a 6,000-hectare exclusive-use conservancy in the north-eastern corner of the park.
How do we get from Akagera to the gorillas?
By helicopter. A transfer from Akagera National Park to Musanze is part of the package, which replaces a long road journey across the country and leaves more of your time on the ground. From there you have three nights at Bisate Lodge, next to Volcanoes National Park, for the primate half of the trip.
What activities are included at each camp?
Magashi runs twice-daily scheduled camp activities covering day and night game drives, boating, guided nature walks, birding and fishing. At Bisate the emphasis shifts to guided birding and nature walks, nursery visits and indigenous tree planting, documentary screenings, and excursions to the community beehive project, reforestation site and village nursery, which close at weekends and over school holidays.
What primate experiences are covered?
One gorilla trekking experience and one golden monkey experience in Volcanoes National Park, with park fees, conservancy fees and all trekking permits included. The park also has around 200 bird species and 62-million-year-old caves if you want to add something beyond the treks. Kigali bookends the trip with two nights and a full-day city tour including lunch.
What does it cost and when should we go?
From US$18,396 per person sharing for 1 March to 31 May. From 1 January to 28 February and 1 November to 15 December the rate is US$21,112, and from 1 June to 31 October it is US$21,843. Included are full board at both camps, all local beverages, laundry, the helicopter transfer, private road transfers, one single entry visa per person and medical evacuation membership.
