Questions about Mafia Island
Is the diving as good as Mafia's reputation suggests?
Mafia and its reefs are regarded as a world-class diving destination, and the coral gardens have stayed pristine thanks to the protection of the Mafia Island Marine Park. The lodge stands in the heart of that marine park, so aquatic life is abundant a short way from the beach.
What are the rooms like?
There are 30 rooms set among the coconut trees, each with its own veranda looking either over the bay or over the large park around the lodge, and hot water throughout. On the sand there are permanent coconut-wood sunbeds and thatched umbrellas.
Where on Mafia is the lodge?
It stands among tall palms on a sandy beach in Chole Bay, near Utende village on the south coast. Mafia is the largest of a small archipelago of islands and atolls and the southernmost of the three islands off the Tanzanian coast, after Pemba and Zanzibar.
