Some Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for the South African visa to be issued?

Please note that visa processing time can vary from location and season. In our experience, visas can take anywhere from 5 working days to 3 weeks, so it is better to apply for your visa sooner than later.

Applications deposited in Gurgaon, Jaipur or Kolkata will travel to the South Africa High Commission in New Delhi for approval.

Applications deposited in Bangalore, Pune, Goa, or Ahmedabad will travel to the South African Consulate in Mumbai for approval.

All this takes time, so if you are applying in a busy season (like Christmas or over the summer holidays) ensure you have plenty of time.

What is an unabridged birth certificate?

In India, it’s your regular birth certificate issued by your local municipal authority. It should mention the names of both parents. South Africa has of late become very stringent about children travelling without their parents or with only one parent due to a rise in child trafficking, so they are asking for additional documents like the birth certificate.

I am going for my honeymoon. Do I need a marriage certificate?

If you are newly married (congrats!), you will need to show some proof of marriage with your application (like engagement photos or a wedding card). Again, this is a new rule because of a rise in human trafficking.

Do I really need to get every hotel booking signed and stamped?

Yes, you do!

Do I need to get the Yellow Fever Vaccination?

If you are visiting South Africa from certain countries, you are required to get the Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate. Please read more details here.

My passport is not machine readable. Will I face a problem?

YES , YOU WILL! One of our team members had this problem and was almost denied entry into South Africa. So please ensure your passport is machine readable.

That’s a lot of paperwork. Can you help?

Unfortunately, we only have the resources to help our guests. So if you are booking through Chalo Africa, we would be happy to assist.

I have a question regarding a business or work visa (critical skills). Can you help?

Sorry, we do not keep track of business visas or work visa requirements for South Africa. We only deal with tourist visas ourselves.

I have another question…

Feel free to ask away! A caveat: while we’d love to answer all your questions, there are moments when we don’t have enough time. We may be late in responding or unable to respond. Sorry!

Last note: The above information is the best to our knowledge. We recommend you verify it with VFS or the SA High Commission if confused.

Hi Manohar, Visa processing in the SA High Commission / Consulate, usually does take longer than the minimum prescribed time. It’s best you contact the consulate directly to know more (or request your visa agent to do the same).

    Hello,
A friend and I are planning to backpack across South Africa. We don’t have any hotel bookings since we’re roughing it out. Is it absolutely necessary to have hotel bookings in all the places we’re planning to go or is it alright to submit just the first hotel that we plan to stay on arrival?
Can I submit a confirmation email from hotels.com or bookings.com while applying for the visa?
Do we also have to submit a day-to-day schedule of our travel?

      December 16, 2016 at 5:40 am

Hi Harshita, yes, we do recommend having a day-by-day itinerary to submit along with your visa application. Hotel confirmations for the entire duration of your trip is also recommended. A hotels.com or bookings.com email confirmation will work. SA is quite stringent in their visa process, so it is better to have all the documents in place before applying for your visa.

Is it mandatory to take a leave letter from his school for visa? Will school ID be enough? Since he’s in primary class , leave is never an issue.
Also, we have only 24 days to travel. Is it possible to get visa now?

Hi Sarathy , you’ll need a marriage certificate if your passport doesn’t mention your spouses name. Not sure if an affidavit would work. Please check with VFS.

I have received a invitation letter from south Africa, as well as hotel confirmation duly signed. Indicating their phone number and address Do I still have to give their ID proof or only letter signed will do

Hi Nitin, The confirmation letters need to be signed and stamped. That should be sufficient.

Hi. My parents in law want to apply for a south african tourist visa. They want to come visit us for a few months.
    Please advise :

    1. How much should i show in my bank account ?

    2. Is a sponsor letter from me stating that they will be staying with me sufficient?

    2. Is the cover letter, a letter from them to say they just want to visit us ?

They’ve been to the vfs but they said they need to redo the letters. Pls advise urgently.
    Thank you
    Nish

Hi Mahesh – Travel agents can apply on behalf of clients as well. However, if you are not going through an agent, you will have to be present.

    Hello,

I really want to backpack Africa – going to the interior parts and staying with the locals for some weeks or months. Is that possible for an Indian? Because if that is the plan, I will not be sure for how long will I want to stay there and also I wont be booking any hotels as such.

Please let me know how that works out – or if that works out.

    Regards
    Pragyan

Hi! Thanks for this post – super helpful! I have a question about the “enter on or before” that’s stated on the visa issued. I have to apply right now (early July 2019) but I’ll only travel in September. In the month of August I have to be in the USA. So my question is how long is the period of time given in the “enter on of before” section of the visa usually? Thank you!

Hi Aastha, the ‘enter on or before’ is ususally the validity of visa (expiry date), generally given for 3 months.

Hi, I have an AirBnb Receipt instead of a regular hotel booking receipt for my 2 week stay. The receipt mentions the Owner/Host’s Name and Address on the AirBnB letterhead but does not have the host’s signature. Will that be considered as valid proof of Hotel Booking (Requirement E as per list) ?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I am planning to cycle solo from Cape Town to Nairobi.
In the process i will need to cross the land border from south Africa to Namibia. How do i apply for a visa in this case, i would not have a return air ticket. Plus i will camp most nights, how will i arrange the hotel booking details.

They told me that i won’t have to be physically present in any of the process(interview) but I heard that we should be physically present to get an visa. Don’t I have to be there? Note: it’s far from my place so far it’s all online with them
