Where does this self-drive route take us?
Fifteen days and fourteen nights beginning and ending in Windhoek, taking in the Gamsberg Mountains, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Twyfelfontein and Damaraland, Etosha National Park and Okonjima with AfriCat. It is designed around Namibia's iconic highlights and can be run at any time of year, with all twelve months rated favourably.
How much does it cost?
Rates start from US$4,200 per person, quoted for 2025 as NAD 77,000 per person. The itinerary is deliberately built for value, covering the country's best-known sights without the price tag of the luxury lodge circuit, which makes it a good option for a longer trip on a sensible budget.
Do we drive ourselves?
Yes. You have a 4x4 double cab, chosen for Namibia's rugged terrain, and you set your own rhythm between overnight stops. Distances in Namibia are long and much of the driving is on gravel, so the vehicle matters more here than on many self-drive routes.
What sort of places do we stay in?
A mix of tented lodges, guesthouses and rest camps rather than luxury properties. The route uses The Elegant Guesthouse in Windhoek, Corona Guest Farm in the Gamsberg, Desert Homestead Lodge at Sossusvlei, Cornerstone Guesthouse in Swakopmund, Camp Kipwe at Twyfelfontein, Okaukuejo Rest Camp in Etosha South, Onguma Bush Camp and Okonjima Plains Camp.
What is there to do besides driving?
At Sossusvlei you have the red dunes of the Namib. Swakopmund offers a search for the marine big five, with chances of dolphins, whales, turtles, seals and mola mola. Twyfelfontein has major rock art and a drive along the Aba Huab River, while Etosha and Onguma provide the game viewing and Okonjima the AfriCat carnivore sanctuary.
