• A moderate level of fitness is required, however, the walking programme can be adapted based on the abilities of each group

How fit do I need to be for the walking sections?
A moderate level of fitness is needed. That said, the walking programme is adapted to the abilities of each guest, so distances and pace are not fixed. Much of the time on foot is in the Mathews Mountains and around Tumaren Ranch in Laikipia, and there are lodge-based days at Loisaba where game drives replace walking if you want a lighter day.
Do we carry our own kit while walking?
No. The Karisia leg is supported by riding and baggage camels, which carry the equipment and move camp ahead of you. You sleep in an exclusive-use mobile camp of traditional safari canvas and netting tents. The set-up is personalised, small-scale and family-run rather than a large group operation.
Which areas does the eleven-day route cover?
It opens at Kitich Forest Camp in the remote, private Mathews Mountains, where the camp sits in forest glades above the Ngeng River. You then move to Tumaren Ranch in Laikipia for three nights of camel-supported walking, a night at Tumaren Camp on the 10,500-acre ranch, and two nights at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp overlooking the conservancy towards Mount Kenya.
Who guides the walks?
You walk the Mathews Mountains with Samburu guides who know the range intimately, and spend time with members of the Tumaren community learning the art of tracking. The guiding team is drawn from among Kenya's most highly regarded guides, and the emphasis is as much on the ecology and the people of these areas as on ticking off species.
What does the cost include, and how does it vary by season?
Rates start from US$12,674 per person sharing for 1 April to 31 May, with US$12,974 in June and from 1 November to 19 December, and US$13,406 from 1 July to 31 October and 20 to 31 December. Full board, drinks, all walking and game activities, park and conservancy fees, scheduled flights, one single entry visa per person, AMREF Flying Doctors membership and laundry are covered. International flights, gratuities and exclusive vehicle use are not.
