Questions about this Rift Valley walking safari

How much of this trip is spent walking?

The walking core is a three-night safari on the Loita Rift Walk, supported by donkeys that carry the kit between camps. A moderate level of fitness is needed for it. The rest of the ten days is lodge and camp based with game drives, so you are not on foot every day and there is room to recover between walking sections.

Which parts of Kenya does it cover?

Three quite different landscapes. Speke's Camp gives you a classic base near the Maasai Mara, the Loita Hills bring ancient forest and trekking through varied terrain with Maasai communities, and Shompole Wilderness is a small private tented camp in the Shompole Conservancy deep in the southern Great Rift Valley, beyond the volcanic country around the soda lakes of Magadi and Natron.

Is this a good trip for photographers?

It is set up well for it. Shompole Wilderness includes shared access to a photography hide, and night drives give a chance at nocturnal species you will not see by day. The scenery shifts from salt lakes and rivers to savannah and forest across the ten days, which gives far more variety than a single-park itinerary.

How is the price calculated and what dates does it run?

Rates start from US$7,869 per person sharing and are based on a group of six guests; costs for single travellers and larger families are available on request. The 2026 dates are 16 January to 31 March, 1 to 30 June, and 10 November to 14 December. There is a 15 kilogram baggage limit on internal flights, in soft bags.

What is included in the cost?

Full board at all three stays, bottled water, tea and coffee at Speke's Camp, soft drinks, beer, house wines and selected spirits on the Loita Rift Walk, and all drinks except champagne at Shompole. Game drives, bush breakfasts, sundowners, guided nature walks and seasonal river tubing are covered, along with park and conservancy fees, flights, one single entry visa per person and laundry.
