Which communities will we meet?
The route takes in the Dorze in the Guge Mountains, the Hamer, the Kara at Korcho above the Omo River, the Dassanach near the Kenyan border at Omorate, and the Mursi in Mago National Park. You also stop at an Arbore village near Mount Buska on the way south. Village visits, markets, traditional dances and body art all feature.
Is there any wildlife on this cultural trip?
Some, yes. Day two includes a boat safari on Lake Chamo within Nechisar National Park, which brings you close to crocodiles, hippos and shore birds. Day six begins before dawn with a drive into Mago National Park, a remote wilderness that is home to the Mursi. The rest of the itinerary is culturally focused.
How much driving is involved?
A fair amount, and the roads are part of the experience. Day three is a scenic 230 kilometre drive through the arid plains near Lake Stephanie, and day four takes a 90 kilometre gravel road to Korcho. All ground transport is in a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4. Internal flights top and tail the trip, into Arba Minch and out of Jinka.
How fixed is the day-to-day plan?
It is deliberately flexible. The itinerary is designed so that you can be moved around to catch tribal events happening on a given day, such as a Hamer bull jumping ceremony or a local seasonal festival. That flexibility is why we work with guides who live in the region and know what is happening week to week.
What does the price cover?
US$2,500 per person covers domestic airfare from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch and from Jinka back to Addis at discounted Ethiopian Airlines rates, accommodation, all meals, all entrance fees, all photography fees, airport transfers, ground transport in a 4x4, professional local guides and government taxes. Visas, international flights, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included.
