Kaingo was built in 1992 and is Shenton Safaris’ flagship camp. Here, six chalets sit idyllically along the Luangwa River. Kaingo is designed simply, to make you feel at home in the bush and to offer you a chance to get close on safari the Shenton family way.
Kaingo means Leopard in the local Nyanja language, which is fitting as our camp has a long history with these incredible felines. The name itself came about due to the resident female leopard, Goldie, who liked the idea of Kaingo so much, she took up residence in one of the chalets.
WHY CHOOSE KAINGO CAMP?
- Fresh supplies for the camp are grown at the Kaingo plot near the Mfuwe airport. Guests to Kaingo and Mwamba are guaranteed a highly natural and personalized experience.
- At Kaingo Camp, watch elephants crossing the river, hippos and crocodiles basking in the sun, or the endless birdlife.
- Accommodation comprises of six chalets each with baths set outdoors on the riverbank and private riverfront decks over the river.

How many activities do guests get each day at Kaingo, and what are they?
Three shared activities a day are part of the rate: game drives, walking safaris and visits to the Shenton hides. That rhythm suits guests who want to be out in South Luangwa morning and evening rather than choosing one outing over another. Rates also cover all meals, all drinks, laundry, VAT and transfers to and from Mfuwe Airport.
Can we bring our children to Kaingo?
Kaingo welcomes children aged 10 and over. Younger families tend to be better suited elsewhere in South Luangwa, and we are happy to suggest alternatives. With only six chalets, the camp keeps a small, family-run feel, which older children who are keen on walking safaris and hide time usually take to well.
What are the six chalets like?
Each chalet sits along the Luangwa River with a private riverfront deck built out over the water and a bath set outdoors on the riverbank. The design is deliberately simple rather than showy. From the decks guests watch elephants crossing the river, hippos and crocodiles basking, and a steady stream of birdlife.
