Virunga National Park’s tourism programme, including mountain gorilla trekking, remains suspended due to the ongoing security situation in North Kivu. The Mikeno Lodge is a 90 minute drive from Goma and offers beautifully appointed bungalows and fine dining. The lodge, restaurant, and bar are located within a forest and offer beautiful views of the rift valley and Nyiragongo and Mikeno volcanoes. Nature walks and visits to local places of interest can be arranged. There is an abundance of bird life, as well as resident blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and baboons. Chimpanzees are also frequent visitors to the area.
Mikeno Lodge is the perfect base to start your Virunga adventure from, with mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and volcanoes all within reach. Not only is it a beautiful lodge located in a pristine (and primate filled) forest, it also offers some great activities.
Five minutes walk from the lodge you will find the Senkwekwe centre, is the only facility in the world that cares for mountain gorilla orphans. The Senkwekwe centre and its care takers feature in depth in the much acclaimed 2014 Netflix documentary ‘VIRUNGA’.
The lodge is located on the grounds of the headquarters of Virunga National Park, and as such it offers a unique opportunity to get a brief insight into the workings of a National Park. You can get a tour of the grounds and meet some of the rangers and staff responsible for the management and protection of the park. In the evening some of the senior park staff might join you for a drink at the bar.
WHY CHOOSE MIKENO LODGE?
- The forest around the lodge offers spectacular birding with over 100 species to be found, a prized sighting being the great blue turaco.
- Primates are abundant, with blue monkeys, l’hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and olive baboons running amock. The lucky visitor might even spot wild chimpanzees around the lodge.
- Virunga National Park is one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet and the UNESCO designated the park as a World Heritage Site.
- The park is also a geologic wonder and contains two of the world’s most active volcanoes

What is the Senkwekwe centre near the lodge?
It lies five minutes' walk away and is the only facility in the world caring for mountain gorilla orphans. The centre and its carers feature at length in the much acclaimed 2014 Netflix documentary Virunga. The lodge also stands on the grounds of the park headquarters, where tours and meeting rangers are possible.
Is there wildlife around the lodge itself?
A good deal. The surrounding forest holds over 100 bird species, with the great blue turaco a prized sighting, and primates are abundant, including blue monkeys, l'hoest's monkeys, black-and-white colobus and olive baboons. Lucky guests occasionally see wild chimpanzees near the lodge.
