Fugitives’ Drift is set in a 5000-acre game reserve with 22km of river frontage. The Lodge and Guest House face roughly north-east and have commanding views of the peak of Isandlwana and of the rough country the fugitives from the battle had to traverse in order to get back across the Buffalo River into Natal.

Are the battlefield tours included in the nightly rate?
They are not. The rate covers all meals, teas and coffees, the Graves Walking Tour and unguided walks on the reserve. Tours of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift are charged separately, as are drinks, the community and conservation levy, child minding, laundry and gratuities.
Is there wildlife as well as Anglo-Zulu War history?
Yes. The lodge sits in a 5,000-acre game reserve with 22km of river frontage, home to zebra, giraffe and several antelope species along with roughly 300 kinds of bird. Views run across the Buffalo River towards the peak of Isandlwana and the country the fugitives crossed.
Is there a cheaper season to visit?
There is. A winter rate applies from 1 May to 30 June, at ZAR 5,199 per person per night for 2024 against ZAR 7,998 the rest of that year. The 2025 equivalents were ZAR 5,980 in winter and ZAR 9,200 otherwise. We confirm current rates on enquiry.
