Kakuli, meaning ‘old buffalo bull’ in the local language, was the nickname given to Norman Carr by the local people of the Valley. Kakuli offers spectacular views and is situated on an elevated stretch of the Luangwa River near the confluence of the Luwi River.
Kakuli was first built in 1984 by Norman, the camp is located on high ground so the chances of it flooding are very slim. If Kakuli flooded, the whole Valley would be underwater!
It is an exciting base for walking and game drives in the dry season, and is our only camp open in the heart of the Park during our ‘Secret Season’, 20 Jan – 5 April, for our Rivers & Rainbows safaris; boating and walking.
The area is renowned for some of the best game viewing opportunities in Zambia with resident prides of lion, leopards and other hidden wonders. This stretch of the Luangwa is bustling with predators and safari activities.
