A little bit about Namiri Plains – After 20 years of being off-limits to tourists, the Namiri Plains in the eastern Serengeti are now home to a staggering density of big cats. From the camp’s eight elegant tents, guests can enjoy expansive views of the wildlife congregating across the stunning landscape until, from November to June, the plains explode into action as the big cats prey on the migrating wildebeest herds.
Supporting Africa’s Future: AWCF
The African Wildlife Conservation Fund (AWCF) is a Zimbabwe-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of many native species—most notably, the beautiful and endangered African wild dog. They began the wild dog project in 1992 in the Savé Valley Conservancy with a population of only 36 dogs; by 2004, that number had increased to 134 dogs. To date, the AWCF has expanded its work with wild dogs to include the entire Zimbabwean portion of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, and works closely with researchers in South Africa, Mozambique, and Namibia. Staff work to monitor wild dog populations, stop illegal hunting for bush-meat (snares are the primary threat to wild dogs), educate and collaborate with the local communities (especially with children in rural schools), and engage with communities and governments to find balanced solutions to human-wildlife conflicts. The AWCF is doing truly incredible and critical work in southern Africa, and we at Chalo Africa are both delighted and humbled to be able to do what we can to support them.
