Kwando Tau Pan Camp, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana
A Luxury Tented Camp in Botswana
Camp Details
Tau Pan is the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and offers truly incredible views from the ridge of an ancient sand dune, an unusual experience in a land as flat as Botswana. It overlooks the famous Tau Pan, a large salt pan recognized for its stark beauty and remoteness. ‘Tau’ means lion in Setswana and the pan is so named for its pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lions, who are frequent visitors to the camp as well.
‘Tau’ which means lion in Setswana, is so named for the pride of iconic black-maned Kalahari lions who frequent the camp (with a particular preference for the family tent!).
WHY CHOOSE KWANDO TAU PAN CAMP?
- Two sets of eyes searching out the action, looking for tracks – this ensures a good chance of sightings, especially predators.
- The area is ecologically sensitive and as such we are not permitted to drive at night nor off road.
- The desert properties make a perfect contrast to the Okavango Delta and Northern Botswana regions, a great way to start or round off any trip.
Questions about Tau Pan Camp
Are night drives possible at Tau Pan?
No. The Central Kalahari is ecologically sensitive, so driving at night and off-road driving are not permitted here. Instead, each vehicle carries a guide and a tracker, two sets of eyes reading tracks, which gives a good chance of finding predators during the day.
What is the lion story here?
Tau means lion in Setswana, and the pan is named for its pride of black-maned Kalahari lions. They are frequent visitors to the camp itself, with a particular fondness for the area around the family tent. Children aged six and older are welcome.
Does the Kalahari work alongside a Delta safari?
It does, and that contrast is the point. Tau Pan was the first semi-permanent camp inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, set on an ancient dune ridge with long views over the pan, and it makes a good opening or closing chapter to a trip through the Okavango and northern Botswana.
