Rwanda is the most compact, most accessible mountain gorilla destination on earth — a country you can cross end to end in under a day, where a trek to see one of the last 1,000-odd mountain gorillas on the planet is a half-day excursion from your lodge rather than an expedition in itself. Add a modern, spotless capital, a Big Five national park you’d otherwise have to travel far larger countries to find, and a genuine culture of conservation, and Rwanda has become one of the most compelling short add-ons — or standalone trips — in African travel.
Like Botswana, Rwanda focuses on low-density tourism — which does come at a high price tag. Understanding Rwanda Safaris from India
Rwanda works on a different scale to its safari neighbours — this is a country you can drive across in a day, not one where you fly for hours between circuits. Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest and Akagera each sit within a few hours of Kigali by road, so most itineraries are built around road transfers rather than light-aircraft hops, with Kigali itself serving as the natural hub at the start and end of the trip.

Flights & Accessibility — Getting to Rwanda from India
There are no direct flights from India to Rwanda, so every trip connects — most commonly via Nairobi on Kenya Airways, via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines, or via Doha on Qatar Airways, with Emirates via Dubai a further option. Total journey time from Mumbai to Kigali typically runs twelve to fifteen hours including the connection. RwandAir, the national carrier, does not currently fly to India, so onward connections into Kigali are made on partner or other airlines rather than a single carrier door to door.
Getting Around Rwanda — Road Transfers, Not Fly-In
Rwanda is nicknamed “the land of a thousand hills,” and it lives up to it — but it is also tiny and superbly connected by African standards. Most tourist sites are within a four-hour drive of Kigali on excellent, well-maintained roads. Domestic flights are not really necessary here the way they are in Tanzania or Botswana; nearly every itinerary we build for Rwanda runs on road transfers. A day in Kigali is recommended at the start of your trip.
Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking runs year-round — Volcanoes National Park is a rainforest, so there is no dry season in the way Kenya or Tanzania has one, only wetter and less-wet months. June to September and December to February are the two drier windows and the most popular for trekking, with firmer trails and generally better visibility. March to May and November are the wettest months; trails are muddier and trekking is more physical, but this is also when the Rwanda Development Board offers a 30% discount on gorilla permits (from US$1,500 to US$1,050) for visitors who combine trekking with a visit to Nyungwe or Akagera — worth knowing if flexibility matters more to you than guaranteed dry trails.
Where to Safari in Rwanda — The Parks & Regions
Volcanoes National Park. Part of the Virunga Massif shared with Uganda and the DRC, this is Rwanda’s headline draw — dense, mountainous rainforest home to around a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, spread across a dozen habituated groups. The same park is also one of the best places on earth to track golden monkeys, and offers a half-day hike to Dian Fossey’s tomb and the former Karisoke Research Station for travellers interested in the conservation story behind the gorillas’ recovery.
Nyungwe Forest National Park. One of Africa’s oldest rainforests, famous for canopy walkways suspended above the forest floor, over a dozen primate species including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys, and exceptional birdwatching.
Akagera National Park. Rwanda’s answer to the classic East African savanna, and a genuine conservation success story: rhino and lion were both reintroduced here after being locally extinct, restoring Akagera to full Big Five status.

What a Rwanda Safari Costs
Rwanda is an expensive destination and its costs run differently from Kenya, Tanzania or Botswana, because the gorilla permit itself is the single biggest line item on most itineraries — currently US$1,500 per person for a standard permit in Volcanoes National Park, or US$1,050 per person during the November-to-May low season if you combine trekking with a visit to Nyungwe or Akagera. This is a fixed government fee, separate from and on top of accommodation.
On lodging, Rwanda spans an unusually wide range for such a small country. Comfortable city-based properties in Kigali average US$600 per night; well-appointed tented camps near Akagera range US$900–1,400 per person per night; mid-range lodges at Volcanoes National Park run US$1,400–2,000 per person per night; and the most architecturally striking, ultra-luxury lodges by the gorilla parks reach US$2,000 and up per person per night. Rates at safari lodges are generally all-inclusive of accommodation, meals and activities other than the gorilla permit itself.
Wildlife & Gorilla Trekking
Rwanda’s headline species is, of course, the mountain gorilla — critically endangered, with roughly half the world’s remaining population found across the Virunga Massif shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC. A permit buys a strictly limited one hour with a habituated family group of up to eight visitors, guided by trackers and rangers who locate the group each morning. Golden monkeys, found almost nowhere else, are a highlight of the same park. Nyungwe adds chimpanzees and a rich list of forest primates and birds, while Akagera has quietly rebuilt itself into full Big Five territory, with healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and reintroduced lion and rhino, alongside large hippo pods on Lake Ihema.
Visa & Entry Requirements for Indian Passport Holders
Indian citizens require a visa to enter Rwanda, which should be arranged before travel. The most common route is Rwanda’s online single-entry visa, valid for up to 30 days, applied for through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration’s portal. If your trip also includes Kenya and/or Uganda, the East Africa Tourist Visa lets you travel across all three countries on one application and one fee (but be mindful of where you begin your trip). We recommend applying at least a few weeks ahead of travel and always confirming current requirements with your nearest Rwandan mission before booking, since visa rules can change.

Rwanda’s lodges have earned an outsized reputation relative to the country’s size — Volcanoes National Park in particular has become a showcase for architecturally ambitious design, from thatched, volcano-inspired villas to intimate lodges built into the hillside overlooking the Virungas. Akagera offers a more traditional tented-camp safari experience at a lower price point, while Kigali’s city hotels and boutique properties give you a comfortable, easy base for the night before or after your trek.
Health, Vaccinations & Safety
There is a moderate risk of malaria across Rwanda, and most travellers take a course of antimalarial tablets alongside standard precautions such as repellent and sleeping under a net where provided. Rwanda requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from, or transiting more than twelve hours through, a yellow-fever-endemic country — a detail worth checking against your specific routing, since transiting through Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Entebbe can bring this into play depending on layover length. Rwanda itself is not considered a yellow fever risk country. As with any international trip, make sure routine vaccinations are up to date and speak to a travel clinic a few weeks before departure — we don’t arrange vaccinations ourselves, but we’re glad to flag anything relevant to your specific itinerary.
Money, Payments & Connectivity
The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Cards are widely accepted in Kigali, at safari lodges and at most tourist-facing businesses, so you won’t need to carry large amounts of cash, though it’s worth having some on hand for tips, small purchases and rural areas where card machines are less reliable. ATMs are readily available in Kigali and larger towns.

Kigali has a genuinely good and fast-growing restaurant scene, and safari lodges typically serve a mix of international dishes alongside Rwandan staples like isombe (cassava leaves) and matoke (cooked plantain). Vegetarian meals are widely and reliably available across lodges and city restaurants alike, and we share your dietary preferences with every property in advance so their kitchen is ready before you arrive.
Packing, Luggage & Clothing for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking has its own packing logic, separate from a standard safari. Waterproof, ankle-supporting hiking boots are essential, as is a lightweight, breathable rain jacket regardless of season — Volcanoes National Park is rainforest, and a downpour can arrive with little warning. Long trousers and long sleeves protect against stinging nettles and vegetation on the trail, and gardening-style gloves are genuinely useful for the same reason. A small daypack for water, snacks and a camera, plus a hat and sun protection for the drier, sunnier stretches, rounds out the list. Neutral, muted colours work well for game drives in Akagera, exactly as they would elsewhere in Africa.
Families & Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking has a strict minimum age of 15, set by the Rwanda Development Board — there is no exception or workaround for younger children, so for families travelling with kids under this age, it is best to travel once your kids are old enough to experience a gorilla trek. For families with teenagers, the trek itself is a genuinely formative, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one we’re happy to help calibrate for fitness level and trail difficulty on the day.
Safety, Emergencies & Practical Concerns
Rwanda is consistently ranked among the safest and least corrupt countries in Africa, and Kigali itself is famously clean and orderly by any measure. Gorilla trekking is tightly regulated by the Rwanda Development Board, with armed rangers and experienced trackers accompanying every group, strict group-size limits, and clear health protocols to protect the gorillas themselves from human disease transmission — you may be turned away from a trek if you’re visibly unwell.

How far ahead to book. Gorilla permits are the pacing item for any Rwanda trip — only twelve habituated groups of up to eight visitors each are available per day, and permits for the June-to-September and December-to-February peak windows can sell out four to six months ahead. If your dates are fixed, especially around Indian school holidays, the earlier you talk to us about securing permits, the better your choice of dates and lodges.
