Maasai Trails is all about your guides, local Maasai from the Loita area, who are eager to share their customs and culture, whilst teaching you the lore of the bush. The Loita Maasai who lead you on these trails are reputed to be the most conservative of this tribe, dedicated to their traditions, ceremonies and rites of passage. As a people, the Maasai have struggled over the years to maintain their culture and have shied away from large scale developments and lodges that comprise other parts of Eastern Africa… thus is the beauty of Maasai Trails. This small low impact camp and mobile camp are a sustainable method to bring income to the local people whilst protecting the natural surroundings of the Loita Hills and sacred Forest, as well as their culture!
The Trails can vary in number of days and any number of people can join from one up to 14, but the trails stay the same and all begin from a base Camp where the donkeys who carry the camp are weighed and packed. Whether one wants to walk into the sacred Loita forest to a hidden waterfall, to the edge of the Great Rift Valley, or find a way of combining all the trails … the beauty of Maasai Trails is the flexibility, and they are happy to accommodate any experience in this beautiful wilderness.

It is a walking safari rather than a stay in one place. Every trail starts from a base camp where the donkeys that carry the camp are weighed and packed, and you then walk with them, camping as you go. Routes can lead into the sacred Loita forest to a hidden waterfall or out to the edge of the Great Rift Valley.
Who leads the walks?
Local Loita Maasai guides, who are reputed to be the most conservative of the Maasai and are dedicated to their traditions, ceremonies and rites of passage. They teach the lore of the bush as you walk, and the camp is deliberately small and low impact so that income reaches the community and the forest is left as it is.
How long are the trails and how many can join?
Trails vary in length and take anything from one to 14 people. Published options run from a two-night extension out of the Mara at US$665 to Through the Rift and the Oltyiani Trail over three nights at US$2,935, and a five-night Great Rift Valley Walk at US$4,025. The rate basis is not stated consistently, so we will confirm it for you.
