The land was originally part of the great La Provence farm granted to French Huguenot farmers in 1694, and the portion that became Rickety Bridge was granted in 1797 to Paulina De Villiers, one of the first female landowners in South Africa. Duncan Spence has owned the estate since 2000.
Can we explore the wider valley from here?
Easily. The Franschhoek Wine Tram runs a hop-on hop-off tour, which is one of the better ways to see the valley's vineyards, cuisine and 300-year history without driving. The estate itself sits between the Dassenberg Mountain and the Franschhoek River, and the tasting centre is a relaxed place to try the wines.
Does it work for a group or an event?
